Leaving from Sandpoint, we’ll ride along Lake Pend Oreille and at Hope pick up the Pend Oreille Nat’l Scenic Byway. We’ll follow the Clark Fork River a few miles and then head north along Bull Lake Road. Not to be missed are the Ross Creek Cedars, which are beautiful 500 year old trees!
We continue north to Troy and follow the beautiful Kootenai River west through Moyie Springs. Once again we ride north just outside of Bonners Ferry where in 1864 thousands of prospectors crossed the Kootenai River, one of them Edwin Bonner who established the first ferry to cross the Kootenai River. For the next 25 years steamboats created a romantic history carrying freight and passengers between Bonners Ferry and British Columbia.
Next to greet us is a scenic road called Orchards Galore in the Creston Valley! There are several fruit stands to stop at along the way! Just west and north of Creston is the Creston Wildlife Management Area and stunning Kootenay Lake! Steep forested slopes flank the 90 mile long lake, which many have dubbed the “Norwegian Fjords” of North America! We’ll love this road that boasts 270 twisties following the lake!
At Crawford Bay there are some quaint little shops and art galleries providing us a break before we take the ferry across the lake to Balfour! Here, mountainous walls of pine and fir reach skyward, with snow-capped peaks soaring above! The perfect stopping point for the evening is Ainsworth Hot Springs! Everyone will love soaking in the mineral pools!
In the morning we continue on to Kaslo which has been voted one of Canada’s prettiest towns! The restored heritage village boasts a spectacular backdrop of the Purcell Mtns with the Kootenay Lake in the foreground! We ride a pass to the ghost town of Sandon, the village of New Denver, where we head south along Slocan Lake and follow the Slocan River! We continue south and east to Salmo, considered the hub of the Kootenays! Riding south along the Salmo River and picking up the Pend Oreille River through Metaline, Ione, and Cusik and back to Sandpoint!
